If You’re Not at the Table, You’re on the Menu: How To Use Your Voice in Outdoor Advocacy with Katie Hawkins

Katie Hawkins reminds us that if we aren’t speaking for ourselves, someone else is speaking for us, and they may not be saying what we want. Today talk about what Katie does currently in policy and where it all started. Like most stories we share, it wasn’t a straight path to get to where she is. Katie shares her journey from the outdoor retail industry to advocating for outdoor policy where imposter syndrome isn’t a strange feeling for her, but she doesn’t let it stop her from forging ahead. Katie also emphasizes our voices matter and it is more important than ever to use them for whatever it is you care about most.

Katie is a nationally recognized female leader in the outdoor industry and currently spearheads the advocacy efforts for Outdoor Alliance in California. Through this work, Katie leads the organization’s efforts in securing robust conservation goals, advancing nature-based solutions to combat the climate crisis, and ensuring that America’s public lands and waters are safe, welcoming, and equitable for all to enjoy. Katie was reappointed by Governor Newsom to his outdoor recreation commission for boating and waterways, serves on the states leadership committee to advance the global initiative 30×30, and was accepted into the 2024 – 2025 Obama Foundation USA Leaders program. Katie lives in the heart of the Sierra Nevada mountains with her husband and two active boys.
